Well great..and I thought Indiana's weather was strange..
Last Friday, some friends(some old, some new) and I went to sushi for dinner,
followed by a bit of karaoke. It was a different place for karaoke, and the music
was quite bad sometimes. MIDI versions of songs can be terrible. The trade off,
however, was quite a selection. I got to sing "Teach Your Children" by CSNY, and
"The Weight" by The Band. They also had an incredible selection of 80s songs.
On Saturday, I went to lunch with my friend Courtney and a party that night at my
friend Dave's apartment. Around noontime, it started snowing pretty hard, and the
ground(and everyone in Nagoya) got cold enough for the snow to actually stick. Soon,
the entire city was virtually pristine white. Saturday afternoon, I went to see the
orchid gardens. Mostly an inside thing, it was very warm, and smelled wonderful.
That night, at Dave's apartment, we had various Japanese foods prepared by Dave's
roommate's girlfriend, a really nice Japanese girl. I ended up spending the night,
instead of rushing around trying to find my bus stop.
Sunday, I read, slept, and studied like a banshee.
Classes aren't bad, but a little boring sometimes. I have been really tired lately,
and am no longer getting 10 hours of sleep a night(as I was when I first returned
here) but around 7-8 hours. As a consequence, I am getting a bit sick. In fact, the
last two days have been miserable, and I am anxious to go home, get my homework done
before dinner, eat and quickly get a ton of sleep. Especially if I decide to go out
this weekend.
I read Thomas Harris's third novel, "Hannibal" and it was awesome. For some reason,
I become so immersed in books lately that I find myself either assimilating
characteristics of the characters, or something similar to that. For instance, I
had multiple dreams where I was wrestling, being pile-driven or giving a pedigree.
That was directly following Mick Foley's book "Mankind: Have a Nice Day."
Fortunately, reading "Hannibal" did not leave me with any notions of cannibalism,
but the almost Fitzgerald style descriptions of art, food, wine, etc. left me with
a desire to sharpen my tastes a bit. Perhaps I will pick up some Smoked Dutch Gouda
at the Jusco. HA! Like I could find cheese here, for anything short of selling my
limbs.
Anyway, last night I went with friends Courtney and Meghan to see the Nagoya
Philharmonic Orchestra and a cello soloist. They performed Symphony No. 9 and
the soloist performed one of Elgar's cello pieces.. it was very good. Afterwards,
a bit of coffee was what I needed to stay up and do the rest of my yomimono,
or reading homework.
I mentioned that the weather is strange here..and it is. Today, it rained. And
it's kinda warmer. Considering that just days ago, it was snowing like nobody's
business, I find it odd. And Japanese people use umbrellas in the snow. I've never
seen that before I came here.
Peace, Love and Yes the snow here does sometimes stick,
Chas
